Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is an advanced therapy whereby a range of specialised, gentle, pumping, stroking, lymphatic breathing and drainage techniques are used to direct lymph fluid toward the lymph nodes and ducts.
MLD helps to clear lymphatic blockages, aiding the removal of metabolic wastes and toxins from the body and so reduces lymphoedema, oedema, fluid retention and cellulite build up. MLD boosts immune levels and can be helpful in the management of ME and CFF. It also calms the nervous system and is very good for relieving stress and tension. It boosts regeneration of collagen fibres, reduces puffiness and improves the appearance of skin.
Over 70% of lymph vessels are found within the skin – so some of the strokes employed are very light but extremely relaxing. A course of treatments may be recommended for some conditions.
When the lymphatic system becomes blocked, fluid builds up and stagnates causing the entire system to become toxic and less effective. This then manifests itself as lethargy, fluid retention and an increased susceptibility to viral or contagious diseases.
Manual lymphatic drainage causes a ‘chain reaction’ – a wave of contractions within the lymphatic system – a stretching and recoiling of lymphatic vessels. This literally pushes the lymph through the vessels towards the nodes and ducts where it is filtered, redistributed or eliminated and in turn this boosts the immune system, clears blockages, eliminates toxins, transports nutrients to cells and increases metabolism.
